From prototype
to programme of record.

Technology that does not make it into the hands of operational users has not delivered. Espanaro's transition to capability discipline provides the engineering, assurance, and programme management that bridges the gap between successful prototype and operational deployment.

The research challenge

Why this matters

The gap between a successful prototype and operational capability is one of the most persistent failure points in defence technology development. Prototypes that demonstrate compelling capability in controlled conditions frequently fail to survive contact with the realities of operational deployment: integration with existing architectures proves more complex than anticipated, assurance and safety case requirements demand engineering work that was not scoped into the prototype, and the procurement and acceptance processes that govern transition into programmes of record add timescale and cost that erode the original business case. Espanaro's transition to capability work addresses this gap directly, not by treating transition as a procurement problem, but by treating it as an engineering problem that needs to be solved from the prototype stage, not discovered after the fact.

Prototype path

From research to capability

Espanaro approaches transition planning as an integral part of the prototyping process. From the earliest stages of a research or prototype programme, we identify the integration interfaces that will need to be engineered, the assurance activities that operational deployment will require, and the TRL progression pathway that the system must follow to reach acceptance. This means that transition does not begin when prototyping ends, it is planned and partially executed in parallel with prototype development. The result is a dramatically shorter gap between demonstrable prototype and operational capability, and a significantly lower risk of late discovery of transition barriers that derail otherwise successful programmes.

Focus areas

Research focus

The specific research questions and capability development areas that Espanaro Labs is actively investigating within this theme.

TRL progression engineering

Structured management of technology readiness level progression from prototype through to operational deployment, with evidence-based gate reviews.

Integration into programmes of record

Engineering the interfaces, APIs, and architectural connections that allow prototype capability to integrate into existing programme architectures.

Assured transition management

The assurance, safety case, and acceptance activities that ensure transitioned capability meets the standards demanded by the operational environment.
