Scenario 07 — Data & Interoperability

The right data.
To the right people.

Delivering timely, relevant data to coalition partners, agencies, and systems — across classification levels and organisational boundaries — without compromising integrity or sovereignty.

The challenge

The operational problem

The ability to share data securely across organisational, classification, and national boundaries is one of the defining challenges of modern defence and national security operations. Coalition operations require the ability to share intelligence, tasking data, and operational information with partners who operate different classification regimes, different security architectures, and different national sovereignty requirements. Domestic multi-agency operations face similar challenges: different agencies operate data under different legal authorities, with different handling requirements, and often in incompatible technical formats. The consequences of getting this wrong are significant in both directions: sharing too little leaves partners and colleagues without information they need; sharing incorrectly or insecurely creates legal, operational, and strategic risk. The technical challenge of building and operating cross-domain, cross-organisational data sharing infrastructure is substantial — and the legacy solutions that exist in this space are frequently slow, expensive, and operationally constraining.

Espanaro's approach

How we address it

Espanaro addresses secure data sharing and interoperability through Byte Harbour, its secure data foundation and information architecture platform, supported by Systems Engineering, Cloud and Enterprise Infrastructure, and Software and Digital Engineering service disciplines. Byte Harbour provides the technical infrastructure for controlled, auditable information sharing across organisational and classification boundaries — including cross-domain guard functionality, policy-based data handling, and the API and data format management needed for interoperability with partner systems. The platform is designed around UK sovereign deployment requirements, with air-gap capability and the ability to operate across multiple classification domains. Our Systems Engineering and Software Engineering capabilities provide the integration and assurance engineering needed to connect Byte Harbour to existing agency and partner systems.
